This was PAINFUL. Plotholes, editing issues (a lot of homonyms made it past the spell check), and frankly, chunks of it that made NO sense whatsoever (and I read a lot of fiction and fantasy.) I also was really sort of agog at Sophia, the main character-- she keeps saying that she has to work at her job, but she spends her time flitting around the globe (on a librarian's salary? Really? Are you kidding me?) and the scenes where she IS actually at work, she's doing something else . Honestly, she should be FIRED. If I worked with her, I'd want to strangle her.

The curse began when the jewel, the Purple Delhi Sapphire, was stolen from the Temple of Indra, the god of war. The stone made its way to Monaco in 1859 and to Prince Charles who intended to give it to his sister, Princess Sapphira, for her birthday but the curse was already starting to work its magic. It ended up in Sophia Marcil’s family when her great-great-grandfather bought it from the curator of the National Museum of Ireland. The original jewel was broken up and used to create a necklace, bracelet, and ring.

Sophia Marcil is vacationing in Cannes with her wealthy fiancé, Nicholas Bexx, Jr., when they argue, and he pushes her off a high cliff into the sea below. She awakens in the past, and in the body of Princess Sapphira. Sapphira is literally being held prisoner by her own mother and a rejected suitor, the Henri, the Comte de Chalais, until she weds him. As she struggles to understand what is happening, she is attracted to Viktor of Württemberg, the nephew of King William, who has come to Monaco to wed Princess Sapphira. Finding Sapphira’s secret diary, Sophia, finds out what has been going on in this time and leaves the palace to find Rochus who helps her return to her own time. She awakens back in her own life in a hospital room and meets Cullen, the man that fished her from the sea after her plunge from the cliff. She breaks it off with Nicholas who stubbornly hangs on insisting she misunderstood what happened, and goes to stay with Cullen’s family. She eventually returns home and stops in with her great-grandmother, Gigi, at her lake house. Sophia slowly gets more information about the jewels out of her great-grandmother, but Gigi dies suddenly leaving her bereft and still with a lot of questions. Sophia returns to her job as a librarian in Ontario and with the help of her best friend, a researcher at the library, tries to uncover the background of the jewel, Sapphira, and Viktor.

This is a greatly slimmed down overview of just the first part of this action-packed story – hopefully, not too many spoilers! It has romance, suspense, time travel, and mystery all in the same book, and would please a diverse group of readers. The settings are very different encompassing Canada, Ireland, France, and Italy. The viewpoint is first person most of the time (Sophia mainly, but alternates with an unknown, creepy, bad person at times), but smoothly goes to third person as needed to tell of action away from Sophia. The story ends with a cliffhanger that makes me want to get the next book as soon as I can.
This book follows Sophia Marcil and Princess Sapphira and a cursed stone set that has been passed in Sophia's family. When her boyfriend proposes and pops the ring on Sophia's finger she gets thrown into the 19th Century as Princess Sapphira of Monaco. There nothing is what it seems as there seems to be a lot of political things going on around Sophia. As she peices things together she gets thrown back and forth between the present and the 19th century. Will Sophia ever break the curse or is she stuck with it to repeat itself?

This book was so good I bought all three and can't wait to see what is next for Sophia as like any great book it left you wanting to know more. This book was full of so many great characters Irish Cullen who saves Sophia a few times over to truly bad characters that make you want to run the other way. Stuck in the middle of it all is Sophia and Cullen and Viktor and Sapphira. What happens next is anyone's guess!
The story starts off with two people having a very normal conversation but that doesn’t last long before a drastic shift in the book’s atmosphere takes us directly into the main plot. Sofia finds herself in a strange place with strange people who seem to be acting out some kind of 1800’s dinner theater. And they’ve cast her as the Princess of Monaco.
Sofia seems to be both observant and forgiving, offering excuses for the way her captors are behaving. She’s a complex character, at times submissive and at other times very hard-headed.
For the most part, I was impressed by the author’s ability to switch between nineteenth century lingo and present day, though at times Sophia would say things like “most” and “for” in a way that isn’t used anymore. The author later presents many other languages, which impressed me.

The best aspect of this book is that the author presents a continual sense of imminent danger. As Sophia continues to delve into her family’s magic, the consequential threats intensify. Chapter breaks in the POV of Sophia’s stalker add a nice touch of suspense.

Before I read on and realized the significance, I found the amount of Sophia’s love interests in both realms a little daunting, but once I met Cullen, I was relieved. He’s charming, handsome, and he’s Irish. Ladies, you’ll love him. The quirky dialogue between him, Sophia and his friends and family is the best in the book.

I became progressively more interested as I continued to read. The author presents a lot of twists, interconnecting both realms and the characters in each.

This book also verges on erotica, but what doesn’t now? I didn't think it was too gratuitous and that it was for the most part tasteful. It didn't detract from the plot.

This is a great read for anyone who likes mysteries, historical novels, and romances. It's probably a great read for someone who likes suspense novels and thrillers too. I definitely recommend it and I'm looking forward to reading the next one.
