A Walk Through Brooklyn by Rashaun J. Allen is a rare collection of poetry. I say that because rarely does an up and coming poet enlighten the senses of an individual the way that this author has done. The scope this poetic work examines issues of fatherlessness, death, love, sensuality, and pain. The audience that reads this book will get the opportunity to take a trip through the imagination and experience of a native Brooklynite by reading between the pages of this collection. It is not often that we (the readers) can divulge in reading the commentary on urban life from someone who has lived this experience, and can reflect on the joys, sorrows, and inconsistencies of life. Rashaun delivers the experiences of a young, educated, black man that overcame hurt and pain to discover the light the end of the tunnel. The misdirection, confusion, and ultimate success of this writer's life are revealed after reading poem after, after poem, after poem. My personal favorites included in this collection of poetry are Tre Got a Problem, Ms. Africa, and My Crush. I look forward to reading more from this upcoming poet, but until then my appetite for delving into one black man's psyche, and reading about a true urban experience has been satisfied after a taking A Walk Through Brooklyn.Product details

In reading A Walk Through Brooklyn, I noticed the writer's truthfulness. Rashaun uses passion in describing experiences of which he questions life and explores human emotion and problems. I enjoyed reading Rashaun's work and can best describe it in one word real.
I was lucky enough to be able to read this book. This book is very well written and very inspirational. As the title states, this book takes you on a walk through Brooklyn and shows you the true life of the author! It was very touching and worth the read. I could read it over and over again and not be sick of it! I love this book and I'm sure you will too!
As a fellow Spoken Word Poet, I just want to say that Rashaun is a soulful, inspiring poet who always writes from the heart. He creates a simplicity to his words in a strong and meaningful way that not many poets out there can accomplish. What he says you can relate to regardless of your upbringing, and still feel what he's saying. I have known Unique for about five years now, and I've always admired that no matter what he writes, it is always truthful. A few of the poems in the book made me cry, especially over losing his mother as well as the son who gets busted with his father for drugs. Unique is a testament to all of us who are trying to get something going with our poetry but not sure of how to get there. Thank you, Rashaun, for your words and taking us through a Walk in Brooklyn.

A Walk Through Brooklyn was an amazing read, Allen writes in such a way that truly allows his readers to feel as if they are in the poems themselves. I felt as if I relived a parts of my own life, having experienced similar situations, having grown up without a father around, and having family members on drugs, Allen brought all these touching issues to life. This book is truly inspiring, even to see how he turned all or these real life experiences into something so positive, makes me want to push for more in life.
